Beyond Labels

Beyond Labels was conducted on the 28th of June 2025, at 7 Stones Vocational Centre, Valasaravakkam, to foster awareness, empathy and inclusion for children on the autism spectrum. Bringing together the parents and the caregivers, the event turned out to be a space for a meaningful exchange of insights and shared learning. The session was led by Mrs. Padmapriya Suresh and Mrs. Umayal Subramanian, core team members of "Spectrum - The Awareness Project", whose expertise and compassionate approach added great value to the initiative. Both the speakers were graciously welcomed and felicitated at the beginning of the session, setting a warm tone for the day. Spanning one hour, the session was highly interactive and informative, focusing on practical tools and approaches that support communication and engagement in children with autism. The speakers also gave an idea of a range of useful applications and digital resources tailored to the unique needs of the special children, enabling parents and educators to understand them better and support their developmental journeys. The key highlight of the session was a storytelling segment using a read - aloud book, through which the speakers demonstrated how children on the spectrum engage with narratives and meaning. This was further enriched by real - life anecdotes, offering deeper insights of the autistic individuals and their families. Followed by this was a Q&A segment, which allowed parents to engage directly with the speakers for an open space for reflection and mutual learning. The event concluded with a vote of thanks, underlining the need to approach every child with empathy and understanding. Overall, Beyond Labels gently reminded us that awareness begins with listening and inclusion is nurtured through knowledge, compassion and action.
